OU HC Celebrates Victory Over Alabama: ‘That was a Well-Played, Hard-Fought Slug Fest’
After Oklahoma's 23-21 victory against Alabama on Saturday, head coach Brent Venables addressed the media and praised both teams for what he described as a “hard-fought slugfest.”

Venebales began his press conference after Saturday's victory by praising both teams in this top-15 SEC matchup, in which Alabama averaged nearly double the total yards of the Sooners. However, Oklahoma had a significant advantage in the turnover margin, with the Sooners coming away with three turnovers, which ultimately proved to be the deciding factor in today's game. Despite this, the Sooners' head coach believed “Nobody deserved to lose that football game.”
Oklahoma’s head coach emphasized his team’s toughness and their full commitment to the coaching staff's teachings. This was clearly on display tonight, as the Sooners' defense forced the Crimson Tide to four different three-and-out drives. Additionally, the defensive unit recorded four sacks and five tackles for loss.
Venables credits his team's toughness to the staff's ability to discover highly skilled, hardworking players who have self-belief.
“I think that we’ve recruited a lot of tough guys that believe in themselves and each other and certainly in how we do things and what we do.” Venables added, “We try to put a lot of stress and pressure on them constantly, we develop our team, and at the end of the day, the guts and the will, the edge, and the belief that comes from our players.”
Venables highlighted the defense's touchdown, which was an interception by Eli Bowen. Bowen returned the interception 87 yards for a touchdown, extending the Sooners' lead to 10 points midway through the first quarter. The head coach of Oklahoma noted that, with the game coming down to just two points, this touchdown was a defining moment that ultimately contributed to the Sooners' victory against a Top-Five Alabama team on the road.
The Sooners' head coach also broke down the call and explained how exactly Bowen was able to come away in a perfect position for his pick-six, which ultimately changed the game.
“Look at the game, it comes down to the one possession there, so yeah, that was a critical, huge play there.” Venables said, “Trying their in an empty set and were kinda showing a double mug look and different call from a year ago, but they got the protection wrong and they threw the ball quickly, Kip was unblocked and our guys are ready for it, were in a zone concept so they had zone eyes and saw the ball coming.”
When asked about the significance of playing in Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium, which has witnessed only three losses by the Tide in the past decade, Venables eagerly praised his team. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the vision he has set for them, which is to win a national championship. With tonight's victory, Oklahoma now has a strong chance for a playoff berth.
“I’m not a boastful or bragadosious kind of guy, but man, I’m gonna brag on our guys, you know, and they deserve this. It’s a hard-fought, and they've put a lot into this opportunity, and we've created a vision for that, so I gotta follow through.” Venables said, “I’m like, hey man, this is what victory looks like and this is how we're gonna do it, and I wanna see you guys dancing and carrying on just having some joy in the moment, and I think it's too easy to kinda go on to the next one and not have an appreciation for the moment.”
Alabama will drop to a record of 9-2 for the season and 6-1 in SEC play. However, the Tide is still in a strong position to secure a spot in the SEC conference championship in December, provided they can win against Auburn in the Iron Bowl on Saturday, November 29th. Meanwhile, Oklahoma will improve to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in SEC play, keeping its playoff hopes alive.
