As the new calendar year begins, hundreds of students and parents in West Alabama are returning back to their norma schedule with school resuming.

It's officially a new semester! High school seniors are getting ready to move on to the next step in their lives and middle and elementary school students are returning to the classroom for more fun and learning. Although each grade is essential in creating healthy habits and children within the school system, it's been proven that elementary school is majorly important.

According to CCA, Elementary school education provides the essential building blocks of knowledge and skills that children need throughout the rest of their educational and professional careers.

What some fail to realize is that every elementary school in West Alabama doesn't have the necessary resources to properly guide and teach kids what is needed to be successful in life. There's been an emerging program in West Alabama aiming to mentor young boys to become stronger leaders, build confidence and more.

The Englewood Leaders of Tomorrow (ELOT) is based at Englewood Elementary School and aims to empower 3rd-5th grade boys at Englewood Elementary School by fostering leadership skills, building confidence, and meeting their developmental needs. Through initiatives like Dress for Success and community partnerships, the program aims to prepare young boys to become future leaders who contribute positively to their community.

Englewood Elementary's Torrus McGill teaches 5th grade at the school and is the creator and facilitator of the program.

"I created ELOT because I saw a need to address the unique challenges faced by young boys in our school and community. Many of them lack opportunities to develop leadership qualities, self-confidence, and the skills needed to achieve academic and personal success," said McGill.

"The biggest challenge is securing consistent funding and resources to fully implement and sustain initiatives like Dress for Success and to expand the program’s reach."

With many parents having heavy financial obligations to bills, it's hard for them to afford extra obligations for programs such as these.
