A park in northern Tuscaloosa will get a little brighter thanks to state funding announced by Governor Kay Ivey Monday morning.

In a press release, a spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs said it will grant $50,000 in federal funds to upgrade the lights at Munny Sokol Park.

The money will go towards upgrading lighting and electrical systems in the parking areas of the park, which is home to several multipurpose fields, trails for hiking or biking, Mason's Place all-inclusive playground, and more.

“Parks should provide a safe and welcoming environment for residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to announce these funds for this worthwhile project.”

The cash comes from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which is a program of the National Park Service administered locally by ADECA.

“Modern electrical infrastructure will help make the park more energy efficient, improve the aesthetics and ensure that the park has a reliable source of power for the long term,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in support of this project.”

City Councilman Norman Crow, who represents the north Tuscaloosa region where Sokol is located, also praised the governor for the move.

"This is great news for our city and our whole community because all residents of Tuscaloosa County will benefit from these upgrades," Crow said.

The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority has also pledged to provide $50,000 in matching funds which are required for the state's investment.
