With 27 breweries in the state, Alabama is leading the charge in the recent craft beer explosion and are producing some of the finest brews in the country.

If you follow me on the social drinking app Untappd, you’ll notice I sample beer from all across the country and the world with over 750 unique check-ins. Let's just say I like beer and hopefully I've learned a thing or two in my experience.

I’ve definitely learned that with craft beer, it’s not about the size of the brewery, it’s the heart and passion of the people brewing it.

    Laika Russian Imperial Stout

    STRAIGHT TO ALE - HUNTSVILLE

Named for the Russian space dog, Laika, this stout is dark, robust, and just the right amount of boozy! You're first greeted with an almost licorice aroma, then your palette is greeted with chocolate, coffee and toffee flavors. Laika alone is a wonderful imperial stout but also equally enjoyable when aged in Cabernet or whiskey barrels.

    Snake Handler Double IPA

    GOOD PEOPLE BREWING - BIRMINGHAM

Snake Handler is the epitome of what a good, double IPA should taste like. With a huge hop presence, it has caramel tones that hit your taste buds on the front side along with a noticeable sweetness. The finish is piney with a sharp, almost liquor bite. Don't underestimate its power though, you may be a bit wobbly when you stand up after your first few pints.

    Downtown North Porter

    DRUID CITY BREWING - TUSCALOOSA

Druid City's Downtown North Porter is an American Imperial Porter that tips its hat to Tuscaloosa's neighboring city. The Porter is full-bodied with rich chocolate, coffee and vanilla flavors throughout. Your senses may also pick up, as mine did, on a slight molasses flavor coupled with some fruit and maybe toasted malts. One of the most complete Porters I've ever had.

    Belgian Red Rye

    BLACK WARRIOR BREWING - TUSCALOOSA

Black Warrior's Belgian Red Rye has quickly become one of my favs! Your taste buds will enjoy some cinnamon spiciness with some earthy tea notes. It's perfectly malty and lightly sweet with a piney hop character.

    Naked Pig Pale Ale

    BACK FORTY BREWING - GADSDEN
The flagship brew for Back Forty, Naked Pig is a finely crafted, pale ale. A combination of German malts and enormous Simcoe and Cascade hop additions give this beer a crisp, explosive flavor from start to finish. Naked Pig pairs perfectly at the dinner table with a juicy grilled steak or burger.
