Common Says Jerry Jones Has a ‘Slave Owner’s Mentality’ Towards His Players [VIDEO]

Common has chimed in on the recent controversy over athletes kneeling during the national anthem. Recently, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that his players will not be allowed to play if they take a knee during the anthem.

In a brief chat with TMZ Sports, Com said that Jones is exhibiting a “slave owner’s mentality” by forcing players to stand for the flag or else. The Chicago native feels that Jones is the unpatriotic one.

“It’s an owner mentality,” he said, “like a slave owner mentality, to be honest. Like, ‘You gonna do what I say on this.'”

“Other people choosing to put their hands over their heart,” he continued. “What makes that gesture better than somebody else who might be praying during the national anthem? Or if somebody says, ‘I’m kneeling for what I believe in.'”

Jones told ESPN on Monday night (Oct. 9), that his team policy which prohibits players from playing if they “disrespect” the flag is not new and has been in effect since last season.

He said players “need consequences” to stand up to peer pressure, and that “it’s in the best interests of the Dallas Cowboys, the NFL and the players” to honor the flag.

The NFL has remained conspicuously silent about the Jones’ remarks about disciplining players who “disrespect” the flag. It will be interesting to see what the players will do during the national anthem come next Sunday.
