The annual 'tax-free' weekend is just about two weeks away so get out those back to school shopping lists and get ready to save some money all weekend long from 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7,until midnight Sunday, Aug. 9.

During that period, the state's 4 percent sales tax is waived throughout the state as are the sales taxes levied by 304 cities and counties according to AL.com.

Here are just a few things to know about the annual back-to-school sales tax holiday.

1. Sixteen new cities voted this year to participate automatically in the annual holiday, including Arab, Bridgeport, Daphne, Decatur, Fairfield, Fairview, Fort Payne, Malvern, Montevallo, Opp, Pell City, Satsuma, Stevenson, Sylvania, Vina and Vincent. (A core group of 145 localities have participated since the program's 2006 inception)

2. According to the National Retail Federation's annual survey, the average Alabama family with school-age children could save nearly $63 and those with college-age children could save as much as $96.

3. Despite its name, the sales tax holiday is open to all shoppers, and no student identification is required at checkout.
