Jay Z Calls for California to Vote for ‘More Schools, ‘Less Prisons’

Jay Z is hardly shy about sharing his political beliefs. So when the rap mogul got on the stage during his show at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles this past weekend, the rap mogul was not shy about encouraging Californians to vote for Proposition 47 at the polls in November.

“Prop 47! California, build more schools, less prisons,” he announced before jumping into 1998’s ‘Hard Knock Life.’

Proposition 47, also known as the “Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act,” would reduce the penalties and give shorter sentences to those who commit non-violent crimes. This would reportedly make prisons less crowded as well as reduce the need to build more jails and result in saving the Sunshine State $1 billion for the next five years. The amount saved would then be put into “K-12 school programs (25%), victim services (10%), and mental health and drug treatment (65%).”

In other tour news, Jay Z and Beyonce‘s On the Run Tour is doing a lot better than people expected. Despite slow ticket sales and the rumors swirling around about the demise of their marriage, the trek raked in more than $100 million and brought in over 90 percent capacity at all the venues.

“These shows sold tremendously well at the end, so we were able to sell-up limited-view and clean up production holds or other holds,” Omar Al-Joulani, VP of North American touring for Live Nation, told Billboard. “It was a very successful tour, and we’re pleased to have that big gross number at the end.”

With tonight (Aug. 6) being the tour’s closing show, it looks like it really was a win-win for everyone involved.
