John Lewis Makes His Final Farewell March In Alabama This Weekend

As we all mourn the loss of Congressman John Lewis, we are reminded of the great work he has accomplished.  Personally, John Lewis and his legacy remind me to speak up, make a difference, and to always vote.  It is noted in a documentary film, John Lewis: Good Trouble, he said that his “philosophy is very simple.  When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, say something. Do something. Get in trouble. Good trouble.” (The American Prospect).

I was elated to receive a press release from Salute Selma, Inc. about the upcoming events that will take place this weekend to honor Congressman John Lewis.  Here is part of the press release.  “This Saturday July 25th, Congressman Lewis will lie in repose from 8pm - 11pm at Brown Chapel AME Church. On Sunday, July 26th at 10am the processional will depart from Brown Chapel and our beloved Congressman will take his (lone) last march across Edmund Pettus Bridge. We encourage mourners to join the final farewell and gather along the sidewalks and roadways for the Congressman’s processional from Selma to Montgomery concluding at the Capitol where he will be the first African American in Alabama’s history to lie in state from 2pm – 7pm. Congresswoman Terri Sewell, Montgomery’s Mayor Steven Reed along with Salute Selma Inc. is encouraging people to line the sidewalks from Selma to Montgomery’s Dexter Avenue. Salute Selma further encourages children & and young adults to display signs reading, “I AM JOHN LEWIS”, adults/middle age adults signs to read, “Thank you John Lewis” and Elders: “Job Well Done”. The public is required to wear face coverings and practice social distancing at all events.”  Congressman Lewis will depart from Montgomery to Washington to lie in state at the U. S. Capitol rotunda Monday, then to Georgia State Capitol building Wednesday. His celebration of life will take place Thursday at Ebenezer Baptist Church Horizon Sanctuary.”
