There are two things you cannot do if you live in Tuscaloosa: 1) Faithfully attend community events and not come into contact with Carroline Shines Edwards and 2) Know Carrolline but not learn about Johnny Shines!

It's sad that Mr. Shines was a nationally recognized musician; yet, he is hardly known in his own home.

According to the New York Times, Shines was one of the last of the original Delta blues guitarists and singers. In his early life, he traveled all across the country playing on numerous stages and began playing even in Europe in his later years before settling in Holt in 1969.

In recent years, his legacy has been revived through Carroline, who proudly proclaims, "I'm Johnny Shines' baby girl." This weekend, Carroline and supporters will put on the Sixth Annual Johnny Shines Blues Festival, which honors the blues legend and his contribution to the genre.
