Some times, game day in Tuscaloosa can be a little overwhelming, so many people coming in from different places, traffic, long wait times in restaurants. So this weekend, I opted to go to Birmingham while Alabama took on Mississippi.

Birmingham is the perfect place to go for a quick trip out of town and a learning experience.

Saturday I woke up and decided to take a tour of the civil rights district. We started first with food. We stopped at a place called Magnolia's BBQ and Fish. The food was delicious. I'm a sauce girl, so the bbq sauce on the ribs were amazing, as well as the crispy french fries and baked beans. They were out of banana pudding, but I'll definitely be back to try it.

The aurora of the area is just beautiful and inspiring. It's all black owned establishments, and everyone is super friendly.

We then stopped at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. It's $15 per person, but you  get your money's worth. There are so many original historical items, not replicas. You're seeing what people saw while they were marching against segregation. It's a lot to take in, but after a week like this, it's great to see how far we've come.
