One church's proactive event resulted in 51 guns taken off the street.

According to AL.com, Macedonia Apostolic Church in Selma partnered with the Selma Police Department and city government to hold an annual gun buyback program Sunday.

A total of 51 guns were turned in, and those turning them in were given $75 in cash. The Selma Police Department will try to return stolen guns to their rightful owners. All others will be broken down and sold for scraps.

With fewer guns on the streets, area residents have to feel at least a bit safer; and it has to be comforting to see a church being involved in its community to hold such an event annually. Kudos to Macedonia Apostolic Church.
