Will Smith Doesn’t Discipline His Kids as Long as They Make Up Really Good Excuses for Stuff

Discipline? Ain’t nobody got time for that, at least not in Will Smith‘s house.

The Oscar winner revealed that he and wife Jada Pinkett have no interest in ever really disciplining their kids, Jaden, 14, or Willow, 12.

Smith sat down for a chat with Metro, and when he was asked when the last time he disciplined Jaden was, he was at a loss for an answer — but not at a loss for words.

“We don’t do punishment,” he explained. “The way that we deal with our kids is, they are responsible for their lives. Our concept is, as young as possible, give them as much control over their lives as possible and the concept of punishment, our experience has been — it has a little too much of a negative quality.”

That’s the point though, isn’t it? Whatever. He continued, “So when they do things — and you know, Jaden, he’s done things — you can do anything you want as long as you can explain to me why that was the right thing to do for your life.”

Obviously, Jaden is a fan of this policy.

“it works pretty well,” noting that, “Other teenagers go to parties and sometimes I be like, ‘Why am I here right now?’ And most of the time, I just leave right then and there. Some things I don’t like to do, that other teenagers do. Everyone thinks that since you make movies, you go to parties, and I like to party, but not normal teenage parties.”

Fair enough, but just wait until Jaden tries explaining why cutting English class to try meth (or even just maybe breaching national and planetary security) was the right thing to do for his life at the time. We think he’d at least be grounded from counting his Ferraris that day.
