Alabama Vascular and Vein Center specializes in treating patients with vein problems from all over the Southeast with state of the art techniques. Our staff is led by John R. Kingsley, M.D., recognized internationally as one of the leading innovators in the field of phlebology and the treatment of vein disorders. Dr. Kingsley and his staff practice the unique specialty of Phlebology in Birmingham, Alabama as well as at our modern facility in Atlanta, Georgia. Additional clinics are in Tuscaloosa, Oxford, Cullman, and Prattville, Alabama where our doctors and staff see patients from the local areas.

Dr. Kingsley is board certified in phlebology by the American Board of Phlebology. His staff has many years of experience, and are acknowledged experts in the treatment of vein disorder problems, such as varicose veins, spider veins, venous stasis ulcers, leg swelling, leg pain, restless legs, night time leg cramps, and other symptoms of venous insufficiency. Dr. Kingsley is one of the first surgeons in the U.S. to include vascular ultrasound in his daily practice, and he is among only a few physicians to achieve the designation of Registered Vascular Technologist.

Dr. Kingsley has written and lectured to many medical and surgical societies, and has been a professor to surgical residents in teaching hospitals. He has given invited lectures throughout the United States and across the Pacific, presenting annually to physicians in Japan and Australia. The practice focus is primarily on the vein specialty, a dedication and commitment unique to the medical field.

Melanie Petro, M.D., is a well known cosmetic surgeon as well as a vein surgeon. She brings to the organization a special expertise in youthful rejuvenation not only for the legs of our patients, but also for the face and breasts and body. Her work with Dr. Kingsley allows our patients to receive the best in both non cosmetic as well as cosmetic treatments.

Meet The Expert

Dr. John Kingsley is the founder and director of the Alabama & Atlanta Vascular & Vein Centers, located in Birmingham, Alabama and in Atlanta, Georgia. For the past 7 straight years the Consumers Research Council of America has recognized him as one of the top surgeons in the U.S. An internationally acclaimed pioneer and teacher in the surgical treatment of Phlebology, he specializes in the treatment of vein disorders and the development of innovative surgical techniques.

Dr. Kingsley is also the co-founder and director of the Alabama Phlebology Training Institute, one of the premier training centers in the U.S. More than 300 physicians and their supporting staff have learned to use the innovative surgical techniques he helped to develop. These modern methods have changed the way vein surgery is performed today, and represent some of the greatest advances in vascular and vein treatment in the past 30 to 40 years. Procedures performed by Dr. Kingsley and his colleagues include the diagnosis and treatment of a range of vein disorder problems, from tiny spider veins to large varicose veins to chronic, ulcerated venous ulcers. These virtually painless procedures are done primarily with ultrasound and laser technologies and rarely require incisions, enabling patients to go back to work within 2-3 days, on average.

Dr. Kingsley practiced may years as a boarded general surgeon and boarded vascular surgeon. He is now board certified by the American Board of Phlebology. He was one of the first physicians in the U.S. to develop and practice modern vein treatment methods, beginning these new procedures in the year 2000.

A native of Pensacola, Florida, Dr. Kingsley earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Florida. He trained in surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland while serving in the Navy. Dr. Kingsley is licensed to practice medicine in Alabama, Georgia, and Oregon. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including an appointment as an Emeritus Fellow of the Australasian College of Phlebology.

In 2009, Dr. Kingsley was selected President of the Alabama Vascular Society, an honor he fulfilled for two years. He is past President of the American Society of Outpatient Surgeons, and former Chairman of the Surgery Dept. of Carraway Medical Center in Birmingham. He is a selected Fellow of the American Society of Vascular Surgery and the Southern Association of Vascular Surgeons. Dr. Kingsley is the primary U.S. consultant for the Tokyo Vein Clinic, and in 2007 was selected to the Australasian College of Phlebology as an Emeritus Fellow. He achieved the rank of Commander in the U.S. Navy, and was awarded the prestigious honorable discharge upon his completion of service. He is the author of over 100 publications and presentations on vascular and vein surgery methods and techniques.

Dr. Kingsley is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and The Society for Vascular Surgery, as well as an Emeritus Fellow of the Australasian College of Phlebology. He is a member of the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, the American College of Phlebology, and the Alabama Medical Society.
