Even though Richmond was the Capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War, Stuart Elementary, the only school in Richmond named after a Confederate general, Richmond Public School board voted (6 to 1) Monday night to change the name of J.E.B. Stuart Elementary to Barack Obama Elementary School!

Earlier this year, The Richmond Public School board voted 8 to 1 to rename the school. J.E.B. Stuart was a Confederate general. The school's student body is about 95 percent African-American.Students, parents, staff, and community members all submitted ideas for the school's new name.  The top three finalist names were Northside, Barack Obama  and Wishtree.

This is not the first school to be named after Mr. Barack Obama!  Actually, so far there 18 schools named after Barack Obama and two of those includes Michelle Obama, however it appears to be the first school renamed from a Confederate general to that of  Barack Obama. Very confident that this will not be the last!
