Alabama Covered Bridges Named Among Best Fall U.S. Road Trips
As we wait for the leaves to turn brilliant fall colors and Alabamians trade summer heat for sweater weather, now is the time to plan a fall road trip. From scenic backroads and big city life to small-town charm, Alabama has plenty of places worth exploring this fall.
Give me a scenic road, a cute town to explore, and a (hot) pumpkin spice latte. I’m just waiting on that first leaf to turn the gorgeous burnt orange, and I’m buying all the sweaters in my Amazon cart.
Travel + Leisure announced their “10 Best Covered Bridge Road Trips in the U.S. to Take this Fall,” and needless to say, my Alabama heart is happy to see one of our own make the list.
The Nine That Made the Best Covered Bridge Road Trips List

- Bucks County, Pennsylvania
- Cottage Grove and the Row River Valley, Oregon
- Fairfield County, Ohio
- Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
- Madison County, Iowa
- Montgomery and the Northern Green Mountains, Vermont

Alabama Location That Made the Top Ten

A trio of historic bridges sits within a relatively short drive of Oneonta, linked by U.S. 231 and state highways 75 and 79.
“Swann Covered Bridge stretches 324 feet across the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River, making it Alabama’s longest surviving covered bridge. Easley is the oldest and shortest of the three, while Horton Mill Bridge crosses the river roughly 70 feet above the water, making it one of the country’s highest historic covered bridges. All three showcase the Town lattice truss design,” said Travel + Leisure.

Other covered bridges mentioned in the North Alabama Blog also include the Cambron Covered Bridge, Clarkson Covered Bridge, Gilliland Reese Covered Bridge, and Old Union Covered Bridge.
