Doctors and parents in Alabama who are expecting children, have a reason to be alarmed this year. State data has shown that the number of babies born with the STD, syphilis has tripled.

To make matters worse, doctors say syphilis can be treated, but mothers are not being tested for STDS. The hardest part is getting people tested is what doctors are upset about.

If you are pregnant and have syphilis, your pregnancy is more likely to end in stillbirth.

So what can women do? First, the woman and her partner should get tested before having any type of sexual activity. If you feel any signs of an infection, go get tested. It's better to be safe than sorry.

The common signs of syphilis is a rash or sore,  if not treated it could cause dementia, organ damage, or paralysis.

Even if you're not trying to get pregnant, you should always get tested. In Alabama, STD rates are higher than national rates.
