Republican Sen. Gerald Allen is still pushing for legislation that would allow people to carry loaded handguns in their cars without permits, and once again, it has been approved by the Alabama Senate. Allen says a person's vehicle is an "extension of your home" and that his bill strengthens the Second Amendment rights of Alabama residents.

AL.com reports that current law allows for the concealed carry of loaded handguns, but a permit is required, and a background check and fee are required to obtain the permit.

Bill opponents say that argument is a slippery slope. In addition, the Alabama Sheriffs Association opposed the bill, saying it could make law enforcement officers’ jobs more difficult and could lead to more incidents of road rage. They also noted that sheriffs would lose some of the revenue they receive through pistol permits, which helps to fund their departments.

Similar legislation failed to pass the House last year.

Sen. Scott Beason introduced similar legislation two years ago before leaving his seat to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in Alabama's 6th Congressional district.
