Strong-to-severe storms are headed our way as part of a larger system affecting several states in the southern region.

Timeline

The timing of the activity means impacts could start tomorrow evening and continue through early Thursday morning.

James Spann, Alabama Weather Network Chief Meteorologist, said “The primary window for strong to severe thunderstorms over the northern half of Alabama will come from about 5:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Storms will weaken during the pre-dawn hours on Thursday.”

Risk Areas

West Alabama and most of the state's northern section have been placed in a 2 out of 5 risk level by the Storm Prediction Center. Outside of that area, risks are either marginal or just thunderstorms.

Risks

  • Isolated – Brief Tornadoes
  • Damaging Winds with Gusts up to 60 mph
  • Large Hail up to a Quarter-size

Influx of Rain

The Weather Channel said, “These storms will also wring out some locally heavy rainfall over parts of the South, much of which is experiencing some sort of drought.”

“Heavy rainfall poses a risk for flash flooding,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

The Townsquare Media Weather Center will be on standby for any necessary updates and nonstop weather coverage in the event of a tornado situation.
