Alabama’s Sal Sunseri Moving to Off Field Role, Will Oversee Transfer Portal
The Alabama Crimson Tide introduced three new coaches to its 2022 staff on Wednesday, one of which being special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler.
Hutlzer's introduction to the staff means the Crimson Tide will be re-assigning longtime assistant coach Sal Sunseri.
“Sal is going to be a special assistant to the head coach, for me. I think there’s a lot of things going on in college football, the landscape has changed dramatically. You guys all know that. Whether it’s the portal, having people on top of the portal, you almost need a staff of people just like you have a staff of people for recruiting to find out who the best players in high schools are," said Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
"You also have to have people responsible to do evaluations in terms of who’s getting in the portal. And also tracking how guys that get in the portal actually do. I think it’s a little bit of a fad right now to think that I get in the portal and all my issues and problems are gonna be solved. But yet it’d be interesting to see how many people really benefit in a positive way from taking advantage of the opportunity to get in the portal, and we’re gonna track those kinds of things and Sal’s gonna be involved in a lot of those things. But he’s gonna be a special assistant to me, aight, to help me in a lot of ways in the changing landscape of college football.”
Sunseri is a veteran in the industry, logging over 30 years in college football. He's spent most of his time coaching on the defensive side of the football. Across two separate stints with the Tide he's helped Alabama win thee national championships already.
His son Vinnie Sunseri played for Alabama from 2011-14 and Tino Sunseri served as a graduate assistant coach from 2019-20.
The Crimson Tide has already been active in the transfer portal over the last two seasons. Alabama added Jameson Williams out of Ohio State and Henry To'o To'o out of Tennessee in 2020 and so far has added Jahmyr Gibbs out of Georgia Tech, Eli Ricks out of LSU and Jermaine Burton out of Georgia.
