The Alabama Department of Transportation will close lanes on two of the busiest roads in the Tuscaloosa area Tuesday to inspect bridges damaged in separate incidents earlier this week.

In a Friday press release, ALDOT said Covered Bridge on Interstate 20/59 West at Exit 86 was struck by the oversized load of a tractor-trailer Wednesday afternoon.

A day later and miles away, large equipment being hauled into Tuscaloosa on McFarland Boulevard clipped the bottom of the overpass where Jack Warner Parkway crosses Highway 82.

Both bridges suffered damage in the incidents and will have to be closely inspected to ensure their integrity.

"The US-82 westbound left lane will be closed Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., while a full closure will occur on US-82 eastbound approximately at 10 a.m. until noon," ALDOT said in the release. "All eastbound traffic will be diverted to Jack Warner Parkway westbound during this period. Motorists are encouraged to take Highway 69 or other alternate routes."

The inspection of the interstate bridge is expected to take around three hours Tuesday, and ALDOT will close the far-right westbound lane of I-20/59 during that time.
