Warning: Rat poison incoming.

Joyless Murderball.

A yearly tradition for Crimson Tide fans at this point, but just what is it?

It all began in 2018 with nothing more than a simple tweet.

In July of 2018, twitter user Mark Ennis likened Nick Saban's knack for dismantling opposing teams to that of "Joyless Murderball", implying that being an Alabama fan must be nothing more than pure misery in its endeavors. Mark, a Louisville Cardinals fan by the looks of his Twitter profile, clearly knows a thing or two about not enjoying his favorite team, so it makes sense that he chimed in here.

Upon seeing it; however,  it's easy to wonder why something with under a hundred likes and only a few dozen retweets has become the sort of calling card for a Crimson Tide fan online, but the Alabama faithful took the term and twisted it around, choosing instead to wear it as a badge of honor.

In response to the original tweet, many notorious Alabama twitter personalities took to the platform, making the term their own and ensuring it could not be used against them.

Some opted to simply remind opposing teams what they were stacking up against when playing a Saban led Alabama squad.

While others chose to remind those opposing teams just how much success "Joyless Murderball" has brought the Crimson Tide over the last decade.

Since then, Alabama has maintained it's iron grip atop college football and the term has become synonymous with being a fan of Alabama on the internet, as weekly throughout college football season, it is used to boast about, yet another, dominating performance from the Crimson Tide that seem to be predetermined at this point.

Even today, as the 2021 season kicked off for Alabama this past weekend, three years after the first mention of "Joyless Murderball", fans took to their keyboards, bragging, yet again, about Saban's surgical deconstruction of another team in a neutral site kickoff game.

The Crimson Tide completely overpowered the outmatched Hurricanes, confirming to the rest of the college football world that, yes, Alabama looks unbeatable again.

Now, it's obvious that "Joyless Murderball" was originally nothing more than a fan of an inferior team trying to make himself feel better, but the fact that it has become such a term of endearment truly speaks to the beauty of being an Alabama fan.

Saban and the Crimson Tide, regardless of if you like it or not, are going to play "Joyless Murderball", and if that means hanging 40 on you through the air or holding your offense to a measly 14 points (Ahem...Louisville in 2018, Mark) it will happen.

At the end of the day, the best advice I can give anyone who wishes to insult Alabama is that if you come at the best, you may just be adding fuel to the fire.
