The 19-month-old girl in critical condition after being severely abused this weekend has died, and the man allegedly responsible has been charged with capital murder, police said Wednesday.

Captain Jack Kennedy of the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said Felix Tabb, the man charged with felony assault after a 19-month-old baby was hospitalized with severe head trauma last weekend, is now charged with one count of capital murder.

Kennedy said Tabb was alone with the infant at an apartment in Broadmoore Gardens on 3rd Avenue East Saturday while the baby's mother was at work and during that time, the child was severely injured.

The 19-month-old was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center, then airlifted to Children's of Birmingham hospital, where she was on life support in critical condition with significant head trauma indicative of severe abuse

Tabb was arrested and charged with felony first-degree assault, but the child died in the hospital Tuesday afternoon and the charges have been upgraded to capital murder because of the young age of the victim.

If found guilty, there are only two possible outcomes for Tabb -- life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

Tragically, this is the second infant in Tuscaloosa County killed this week after her mother left her in the care of a man.
