Man Loses Leg After Truck Runs Him Over in Brookwood, Driver Charged with Attempted Murder
A Bessemer man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly intentionally struck another man with his truck, causing injuries that required the amputation of the victim's leg.
In court documents obtained by the Tuscaloosa Thread, police said the victim was walking down Lock 17 Road in Brookwood last Friday, October 21st, when he was spotted by Gary Lee Gilbert Jr., who was driving by in a truck.
Gilbert allegedly veered off the road to hit the victim with his truck. The victim told police he tried to get out of the way but was still hit by the vehicle.
Court records say the victim's injuries required the amputation of one of his legs below the knee.
Gilbert, a 52-year-old man from Bessemer, Alabama, was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted murder for the assault.
Although the incident occurred on Lock 17 Road not far from Warrior Met Coal's headquarters and mines in the area, a spokesman for the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said investigators do not believe the incident is related to the ongoing labor strike there that began last April.
Gilbert was placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he remained Wednesday afternoon with a bond set at $60,000.
