Crimson Tide Track and Field has Record Setting Day

On Saturday at their meets in Fayetteville and Baton Rouge, Alabama Track and Field set three new school records.

Mercy Chelangrat, Tamara Clark and Robert Dunning all had record-setting performances in their events, including the 5,000-meter, 100-meter and 110-meter hurdles.

Chelangrat competed in the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, crushing the previous 5,000-meter record of 15:51.85 set by Ester Getahi in 2019 by nearly 40 seconds, posting a time for herself of 15:17.79. The record-setting time was also good enough to rank Chelangrat first in the nation and 16th in the world.

Down in Baton Rouge, Clark became the first woman in University of Alabama history to post a sub 11-second 100-meter dash, finishing with a time of 10.96, which also ranks first in the nation. Clark defeated her own school record set in 2018 and now holds three of the five fastest 100-meter times on school history.

Finally, Dunning turned in a time in the 110-meter hurdles of 13.28, breaking not only the University of Alabama record, but the LSU stadium record as well which was set in 2017. Rounding out the day for Dunning, he also took fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, turning in a time of 50.45.

Alabama Track and Field goes back to Baton Rouge on May 1 for the LSU Invitational, with the SEC Championships coming just two weeks later at College Station. The Crimson Tide have some excellent athletes within the program, many of which will be competing for chances at SEC and national titles.
