Damaging Winds, Quarter-Size Hail Possible Across Portions of Alabama

James Spann, Alabama Weather Network Chief Meteorologist, said, “Like yesterday, scattered thunderstorms will form during the peak of the heat, mainly over the northern half of the state.”

While I was out yesterday afternoon, I ran into a storm system, but what really caught my attention was the lightning. As a self-proclaimed weather nerd, I found it pretty impressive.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed a good portion of West Alabama under a “Marginal Risk” (Level 1 out of 2) for severe thunderstorms.

For those traveling today, it’s good to know that the northeast corner of Alabama is under a “Slight Risk” (Level 2 out of 2)

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, residents can expect active weather between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Possible Threats

• Damaging Winds with Gusts up to 60 mph
• Large Hail up to Quarter Size

Spann said that “Heavier storms will be capable of producing strong winds and hail... most of them will come from noon until 9:00 p.m.”
