An average of 92 cases per day was reported in Tuscaloosa County. There was a 96% increase from the average two weeks ago. There are 115 patients in DCH being treated for COVID, which is over double what it was two weeks ago.

Dr. P explained the differences between COVID-19 and the Delta variant. The Delta variant causes more infections and spreads faster than early forms of COVID-19. The Delta variant is highly contagious, nearly twice as contagious as the previous variants. New data suggests the Delta variant might cause more severe illnesses than previous strains for those who aren't vaccinated. The unvaccinated remain five times more likely to become infected.

The Delta variant presents a serious threat, and now more than ever it's important to get vaccinated. This is a new strain of COVID-19. The treatment for the infected is the same, but we are seeing the Delta variant cause more severe diseases.

It is important to encourage your children to wear a mask at school. Tuscaloosa city has now mandated masks for students and employees until September 10. And then they'll review the status of the mask mandate. Tuscaloosa County School students don't have to wear a mask  as it is optional. Dr. Peramsetty encourages Tuscaloosa County to mandate masks, the same as Tuscaloosa City Schools has done.
