Have you ever heard of someone being diagnosed with HIV and it made you wonder about your own status? Well, National HIV Testing Day is coming soon, and leading up to it, there are numerous places you can get free testing in the Tuscaloosa area.

The West Alabama HIV Prevention Network encourages you to "Take the test, Take Control." Free testing is offered at all 3 Tuscaloosa County Walgreens stores from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 23 and Friday, June 24 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 25. Free tests are offered for anyone age 13 and above. More information is available at (205) 554-4526.

Outside of this event, though, Whatley Health services offers free testing from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; and West Alabama AIDS Outreach tests all day during normal business hours Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. or by appointment on Fridays.

We all know that HIV rates are increasing at alarming rates in some demographics, including teens (who think they're invincible), Black women, and.... believe it or not *face turning red*..... senior citizens! The sad reality of the matter is that we have the ability to change this, especially when it comes to sexual transmission. It's simply a matter of not only knowing your status but also not being sexually involved with someone whose status you don't know.

What's even worse is that free testing is offered all year long at the West Alabama AIDS Outreach. Their hours may not be feasible for some. So, it's great that the West Alabama HIV Prevention Network has testing available during both evening and morning hours. If you don't know your status or haven't been tested in a while (which means you don't know your CURRENT status), go ahead and make plans to "Take the Test, Take Control!"

I was tested late last year. It's about time again, but here's my last experience:
