The West Alabama community can expect a huge change in the coming years. Gov. Kay Ivey recently announced new construction coming to West Alabama.

On Friday, November 12, 2021, Gov. Kay Ivey and several state and local leaders broke ground on a historic West Alabama Corridor Project.

It was announced that the state would be providing a four-lane corridor from Thomasville to Tuscaloosa. The West Alabama Corridor project will provide interstate connectivity to rural counties that currently lack a four-lane to an interstate highway, ultimately creating a four-lane connection between Mobile and Tuscaloosa.

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox was one of many in attendance Friday when the announcement was made. Mayor Maddox tweeted "I believe when the Governor of Alabama is successful, our state will be successful."

Governor Kay Ivey spoke on the importance of this project and what it means to the state of Alabama. "This is more than just another Build Alabama project. It's much bigger," Ivey stated.

"This groundbreaking today symbolizes a symbolic gesture of the state's commitment to complete a four-lane highway from Mobile all the way to Tuscaloosa and in the future, even further north."

Many Alabamians will appreciate this new four-lane highway being built. In fact, Gov. Ivey mentioned how long the citizens of the Yellowhammer state have been waiting on a project like this to happen.

"By our records, this road or one just like it, has been the dream and promise of almost every governor going back to Big Jim Folsom in the '50s."
