The Gordo Greenwave (2-0, 0-0) won its home opener against the Aliceville Yellow Jackets (1-1, 0-0) tonight 30-12 at Pickens County High School. The Greenwave is playing its home games at Pickens County High School due to stadium construction.

Coach Ryan Lolley's Gordo squad utilized a strong rushing attack and stifling defense to control the ballgame and come away with the second win of the year.

"You know I thought we started fast like I wanted to start, it's early in the year but at the same time, as hard as our guys have worked, I would have liked if we could have, you know, had more of a killer instinct right there at the beginning of the game because I thought we got on them early," said Lolley.

The Greenwave defense backed up the Yellow Jackets to force a safety on the game's opening possession, one of two safeties in the game. The Gordo offense largely executed well, scoring touchdowns on three of its four possessions to start the game.

Gordo's defense in total forced four turnovers, two safeties and two sacks. The unit was led in tackles by Xavieon Glass. Azariah Maddrey-merri secured both sacks for the Greenwave, Christopher Neel hauled in two interceptions, Kohl Summerville recorded an interception and Tyrell Mayberry recovered a fumble for the Greenwave.

"Those guys are great football players. They work extremely hard and they're really good kids, so at the end of they day, I'm not surprised by them doing that because they work hard in practice and they do the things that we want them to do so that's when opportunity meets hard-work and that's when good things happen for us," said Lolley on his defensive standouts.

The Greenwave took advantage of a strong ground attack on offense with sophomore Rayshawn Williams leading the way. In total the Greenwave was able to gain 237 yards on the ground

Williams had 141 yards and a touchdown on the ground, he also caught a 10-yard screen pass for his second touchdown of the game.

Defensive standout Xavieon Glass also ran the rock for Gordo, carrying the ball for 37 yards.

Highly-touted junior quarterback Tanner Bailey completed 9/16 passes for 110 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by sophomore quarterback Tyjarian Williams, he passed for 95 yards and one touchdown and he rushed for 105 yards. However Williams also threw three interceptions to the Greenwave defense.

Junior Landon Ball led the Yellow Jackets with 48 yards receiving and a touchdown. Junior Jermaine Brewer scored Aliceville's only other touchdown of the night on a 5-yard touchdown run, in total he tallied 31 yards rushing.

Next week Aliceville will play host to the Addison Bulldogs in a region matchup.

Gordo moved up to 4A this school year and will travel to Oak Grove in its first game in a new classification and region.

"We know we're going there, we know they're going to be able to run the football and they're going to try to run at us. So we just gotta be able to play tough, man football and take care of the ball, control the line of scrimmage and win on first down. Do some things like that. We know they're going to have a great team and it's going to be different for us moving up but at the same time, we're going to go back to work on Sunday, get in there in the weight room, get in the film room and start practicing and get ready to roll for the next one. We're just glad to be playing right now," said Lolley.
