TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Crimson Tide (4-1) eked out an uncomfortable 2-1 win over Alabama State (2-2) in their first taste of midweek action in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama reliever Bobby Alcock earned the win in his season debut. The senior right-hander tossed two innings, only allowing one hit while striking out three Hornets batters. Southpaw bullpen staple Matthew Heiberger picked up the save, tossing a perfect top of the ninth — including two Ks — to close the door on the Hornets' upset bid.

Alabama State starting pitcher Jaxon Baptist was tabbed with the loss. Despite not allowing an earned run, a throwing error by Baptist, and a passed ball, were the two Crimson Tide runs of the evening. Baptist scattered four hits while striking out seven Alabama batters.

Looking to jumpstart the Alabama offense after a 3-2 win at Samford Tuesday afternoon, the Crimson Tide bats struggled to find a rhythm. Only picking up five hits, the Alabama lineup struggled to send runners home, hitting 2-15 with runners on and 0-8 with runners in scoring position.

However, the key moment for the Crimson Tide came at the top of the second inning.

With bases loaded and one run already driven in, starting pitcher Luke Smyers needed two outs to avoid a crooked number early in his first collegiate start. The Virginian struck out Aden Malpass in three pitches, then forced a Miguel Oropeza fly out into the glove of Eric Hines to end the frame with only one run crossing for the Hornets.

Alabama returns to action Friday against Rhode Island.
