For the first time since 2001, the Alabama Crimson Tide fell in the opening game of the season. Alabama fell to the Florida State Seminoles in Doak Campbell Stadium, 31-17, on Saturday night in the first game of Alabama's second season under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

It's DeBoer's fourth loss to an unranked team since taking the Alabama head coaching job. Alabama fell to Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, and Michigan last season. Nick Saban lost to four unranked teams during his entire 17-year career at Alabama.

The lone bright spot on the night was senior wide receiver Germie Bernard, who finished the day with career highs in catches (8) and yards (146). The Tide's leading rusher was redshirt freshman Kevin Riley, who carried the ball five times for 31 yards.

Ty Simpson made his first career start for the Crimson Tide after sitting behind Jalen Milroe for two seasons. In his first start, Simpson completed 53 percent of his passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed nine times for 17 yards. He was sacked three times.
