John Metchie Traded to Eagles: Joins Alabama Reunion, Faces Roster Battle
Former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III was traded Sunday from the Houston Texans to the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Metchie III was drafted by the Texans as the No. 44 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Metchie III's start to the NFL has been challenging. He missed his rookie season after being diagnosed with leukemia in July 2022. Following treatment and clearance, he returned for the 2023 NFL season, appearing in 16 games and recording 16 receptions for 158 receiving yards and one rushing attempt for four yards.
In the 2024 season, Metchie III's stats improved as his usage increased. He recorded 24 receptions for 254 receiving yards and one touchdown across 13 games.
Entering his fourth NFL season, Metchie III will join the Eagles, where an Alabama connection runs deep. He will team up with quarterback Jalen Hurts, offensive guard Landon Dickerson, tight end Cameron Latu, cornerback Eli Ricks, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, offensive lineman Tyler Steen, defensive tackle Byron Young, and linebacker Jihaad Campbell.
Notably, Metchie III, Smith, Young, Dickerson, Latu, were all part of Alabama's 2020 National Championship roster.
Despite the familiar faces, Metchie III faces a challenging path ahead, entering a loaded wide receiver room where he will compete for a spot on the 53-man roster. The current room includes Ife Adeyi, A.J. Brown, Elijah Cooks, Darius Cooper, Jahan Dotson, Giles Jackson, Terrance Marshall, [John] Metchie III, Taylor Morin, Ainias Smith, [DeVonta] Smith, Avery Williams, and Johnny Wilson
