John Metchie is making a notable return, and it’s capturing attention. The former standout wide receiver for the Tide concluded his junior season with 96 receptions, 1,142 yards, and eight touchdowns before suffering from a knee injury on Dec. 4, 2021.

Over three seasons with the Tide, Metchie amassed 155 receptions for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is particularly remembered for the impactful tackle on Florida Gators defensive back Trey Dean during the 2020 SEC Championship.  

Following an impressive college career, Metchie was chosen as the 44th pick in the 2022 NFL draft by the Houston Texans. However, he faced setbacks, including recovery from a knee injury and a diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia, which sidelined him for his entire 2022 rookie season 

After triumphing over both the injury and cancer, Metchie’s recovery journey was marked by unwavering dedication. In 2023, he focused on training and patiently awaited his opportunityfinishing the season with 16 receptions for 158 yards. 

As the 2024 NFL season approaches, Metchie’s resurgence is being recognized, highlighted by a standout preseason where he recorded 10 receptions for 100 yards and his first NFL touchdown. Several teams have expressed interest in acquiring Metchie from the Texans. With roster adjustments and trades on the horizonMetchie could potentially have a breakout season with a new team. The Texans currently boast a talent-rich wide receiver group, while other franchises are still in search of a capable receiver 

Which teams could benefit from adding Metchie? He has been associated with the Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Buffalo Bills, and Washington Commanders. 

With the possibility of rekindling with Bryce Young, the two could have a promising future for the Panthers organization. The two previously established a strong offensive partnership. During the 2021 season with the Tide, Young completed 366 of 457 passes for 4,872 yards and 47 touchdowns, with Metchie accounting for 1,142 of those yards and eight touchdowns.  

The Commanders could also gain from Metchie’s presence. They recently acquired the promising former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, who has proven himself to be a formidable opponent and has garnered significant praise for his performances.
