The Open Competition at Right Tackle for the Crimson Tide
Alabama freshman offensive lineman Micahel Carroll found himself on the field with the starting offensive line on Saturday night, in addition to rotating in with the second unit throughout much of the second half.

The Crimson Tide planned to rotate players at a couple of positions, including quarterback, right tackle, tight end, and a couple of spots along the defensive line. Carroll held his own in place of redshirt sophomore Wilkin Formby, who has struggled at times during his Alabama playing career.
Formby started two games at right tackle for the Crimson Tide last season, and two so far for Alabama in 2025. But Carroll (who took double-digit snaps on the night) felt notable replacing Formby.
Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was asked on Monday about Carroll's play and if there's a competition at right tackle.
"100% I see it as a competition," he said. "All these guys are competing for spots. So I thought Michael did a great job. I think there's some things he certainly needs to clean up. But the thing I like about Michael is he does compete. And what you saw on the field in the game is how Mike practices.
"So he's a super-competitive, physical kid, that I thought they're really nice job for his first time."
Grubb was also asked about the play of Jaeden Roberts, who played in his first action for 2025 last Saturday against ULM.
"Jaeden played well," Grubb said. "He had about four blocks that I thought were good finisher blocks that you expect out of a guy like J-Rob. I think he's still working himself into game shape. He was out for a decent amount of time, but getting back to where he can play a full football game. He's still kind of getting through all that, but he did a great job."
Alabama kicks off against Wisconsin on Saturday, September 13, at 11:00 a.m. CT.
