Ty Simpson Shines At NFL Combine
Former Tide quarterback Ty Simpson shone during his workout at the NFL combine on Saturday afternoon. Simpson's official measurements came in at six-foot-one, 211lbs, with an arm length of 30 7/8" and a hand size of 9 3/8". Simpson's height at the NFL combine was one inch shorter than his listed height with the Crimson Tide, and his weight was three pounds heavier than his listed weight. The former Crimson Tide signal caller did not run the 40-yard dash.
According to NFL analyst Lance Zierlein, here are Simpson's strengths:
Strengths
- Strong four-game stretch against Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri and Tennessee
- Had freedom to set and adjust protections at the line.
- Recognizes coverage quickly and moves through progressions with pace.
- Risk management is generally good.
- Exceptional footwork, with feet tied to eyes.
- Climbs, slides and resets the launch point when edge pressure closes in.
- Decisive in probing and attacking intermediate pockets of the zone.
- Throws with repeatable mechanics from snap to snap.
- Rarely misses basic throws to open receivers between the numbers.
- Receiver drops distort his accuracy numbers.
- Able to create on second reaction when the play breaks down.
- Escapes pocket with enough speed to move the chains.
Simpson only has one season as the starter for the Tide, which may hinder some things in the draft process for some teams, but he still has fantastic film to go off. He did show some weaknesses and inconsistencies due to injuries down the stretch of the season. Here are some other weaknesses that Lance Zeirlien identified for Ty Simpson.
Weaknesses
- Only one season of starting experience.
- Carries a below-average build and dealt with nagging injuries in 2025.
- Posted a 57% completion rate over his final four games.
- Safeties took advantage of lazy eye discipline late in the season.
- Base can get jittery when under duress, leading to inconsistent ball placement.
- Average arm talent, with throws on the menu that should be ordered sparingly.
- Inconsistent timing on deep throws.
- Struggles layering the ball over linebackers and beating tight man with precision.
- Needs better judgement on when to extend versus when to take a profit.
- Held the ball for too long, leading to unnecessary sacks.
According to NFL.com, Simpson's player comparison is none other than former Crimson Tide signal-caller Mac Jones, who the New England Patriots drafted with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.
