Caution! Travel Warning Issued For Popular Spring Break Location

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory urging travelers to exercise increased caution due to crime in a popular spring break destination. The advisory highlights concerns over criminal activity, particularly on the main island, where local authorities may have limited resources to investigate incidents.

A tragic event in January underscored these concerns when an Illinois sheriff's deputy, Shamone Duncan, was killed in a shooting while vacationing. Gunfire erupted outside a restaurant, leaving three people injured. In response, the State Department recommends that travelers avoid walking alone, especially at night, and exercise caution when interacting with strangers. They also advise not resisting during robbery attempts and preparing an emergency plan in advance.

The department stresses the importance of checking luggage carefully before departure, particularly to ensure there are no firearms or ammunition. Strict enforcement of weapon laws is in place, including at the airport, and violations can result in significant legal consequences, including arrest, jail time, and heavy fines. Some travelers have faced weeks-long detentions after being found with ammunition in their luggage.

In 2024, several American citizens were detained at the airport after unknowingly carrying bullets while returning home. The U.S. Embassy in Nassau, which provides consular assistance for citizens in the region, also offers support to those affected by crime.
