Concern for Flooding, Winds, Tornadoes in Portions of Alabama

A wet weekend is ahead for a good portion of Alabama this weekend. Also, there is the possibility of strong to severe storms as well.

Potential for Flooding This Weekend

Because of the expected repeated rounds of heavy rain, flooding is possible. The National Weather Service in Birmingham said this could impact areas mainly near and north of Interstate 20. The main threat is localized flooding of the poor-drainage regions and small waterways.

Strong to Severe Storms Outlook

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said, "A surface low will form along the front and pass just north of Alabama, setting the stage for strong to possibly severe thunderstorms.”

Risk Areas

The Storm Prediction Center has designated the southern half of the state as being at a "slight risk" (level 2/5), while a "marginal risk" (level 1/5) extends into the Tennessee Valley.

Currently, the Townsquare Media Coverage area is split between a “marginal” and “slight” risk categories.

Probable Threats

“The main threat will come from strong thunderstorm winds, but an isolated tornado or two can't be ruled out in the "slight risk" area over the southern half of Alabama,” said Spann.

Timing Outlook

The period of potential threat begins late Sunday night, around midnight, and progresses eastward through Monday morning.

Adding in a layer of uncertainty about the potential for severe weather. “If unstable air is able to make it northward to central Alabama, a risk for severe storms will materialize,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
