The winter season is here, and we are closely monitoring a weather scenario that could impact portions of Alabama Thursday night into Friday. The area of concern is a cold core, and the upper low is the area of concern.

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said, "Cold core upper lows are a "weatherman's woe" and can bring surprises, so as always, watch for forecast changes.”

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said the system could “swing across the Tennessee Valley Thursday into Friday. It could offer a chance for some rain/snow showers across the northern part of the state, mainly near and north of the 278 corridor (IOW, Hamilton, Cullman, Gadsden north) as things currently stand.”

“There will be sufficient moisture for some precipitation over the northern third of Alabama, and dynamic cooling under the upper low means a few snow showers could be in the mix,” said Spann.

Any Impacts?

At this time, it doesn’t seem like there will be any significant accumulation or impact because surface temperatures are generally above freezing, soil conditions are relatively warm, and there is a lack of moisture.
