Alabama Sorority Member Dies In Fiery Car Crash
In the early wee hours of January 15 fire and rescue responded to a crash that was called in as a vehicle fire on Grelot Road. When firefighters were able to extinguish the flame, there was one fatality reported.
The victim was 23-year-old Jakeira Washington, who seemed to have a promising future. Native of Sweet Water, Al, Washington had completed her bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration in May 2023 from South Alabama located in Mobile.
While working on her master's from West Alabama, Washington was employed at USA Mitchell Cancer Center with a role as a patient service coordinator.
Washington was initiated as a member of the Divine 9 organization Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, chapter Epsilon Upsilon at South in 2020, and had roles on the National Pan-Hellenic Council as well as her chapter board. Unfortunately her passing took place on her Founders Day, formally known as "J15".
In the breaking news of Washington’s tragedy, many people spoke out. Friends, family, and the Greek community have had many positive things to say about Jakeria, as you can see below.
Washington was driving a white, four-door, Hyundai Elantra that landed on its side and caught fire in the woods near Cimarron Ridge Apartments in Mobile, Al. The details of how the incident occurred are still under review at this moment but what we do know is officials are working to update the community on this tragic incident.
