A Friday morning collision on Highway 43 in Northport has left at least one person in critical condition, police confirm.

Keith Carpenter, the assistant chief of the Northport Police Department, said officers were called to the scene of a car accident on 43 a few minutes before 6 a.m.

Carpenter said the accident involved two vehicles that reportedly struck head-on not far from Chapel Hill Baptist Church.

The assistant chief said at least one person was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

As of 12:30 p.m., Carpenter said there were no fatalities yet associated with this wreck.

The accident snarled traffic Friday morning, but the roadway has since re-opened.
