Crash Sends SUV Into Wall of Credit Union in Tuscaloosa, Damaging Mural & Closing Lobby

A mural painted on the exterior wall of a credit union in Tuscaloosa's Alberta City was badly damaged when a car crashed into the institution Friday.

Stephanie Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, told the Thread that the wreck happened around 5:15 p.m. Friday.

She said a Hyundai Elantra was turning onto University Boulevard from 28th Avenue when it collided with a westbound Hyundai Santa Fe.

The two-car crash caused the Santa Fe to then leave the roadway and crash into the Alabama One Credit Union at 2735 University Boulevard East.

A woman and four juveniles in the Santa Fe were transported to DCH for relatively minor injuries, and police said the crash destroyed part of the exterior wall of the building, which was patched with plywood Monday.

The affected wall bears a mural that was finished last winter and celebrates the Tuscaloosa community, depicting the now-closed Leland Lanes bowling alley, the wooden and steel truss bridge that spans the Black Warrior River and more.

The credit union said on social media that the damage to the wall has caused them to close their lobby until repairs can be made, but said drive-through service is still available.
