Yellowhammer State is filled with great African American leaders from the past, present, and future. We thank our West Alabama community partners, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Delta Phi Lambda Chapter, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated,  Eta Xi Omega Chapter for their continued support.

Black History Maker of Alabama - Kevin Croom

Kevin Croom, the executive director of The Croom Foundation, is impacting at-risk youth in West Alabama by exposing them to college opportunities.

Croom, a Tuscaloosa native, is a former all-star baseball player who went on to accept a scholarship to play on a collegiate level.

A graduate of the University of Alabama, he went on to begin his career as a businessman in the pharmaceutical sales industry.

Once established, he returned to a childhood pastime and passion of writing and speaking and began to shift atmospheres that would encourage and bring positive change in the lives of many people.

Croom serves as the founder and director of The Croom Foundation, which was "created to make a difference in high crime, disadvantaged areas of West Alabama" by taking "youth and teens off of the streets and place them into college seats."

Croom said being a black history maker is important because advancements of today were made possible by the blood, sweat and tears of those who fought and sacrificed.

"Learning our past is how we keep their work, their legacy and their dreams alive. Life isn't about creating something new, but more about using the tools and knowledge handed down to us from generations before to create something better."
