The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America will host a four-day homeownership event series where they will make two stops in Hale County this weekend.

According to a release from NACA, the organization's historic "Achieve the Dream" Martin L. King economic justice event series will begin Friday and run through Monday.

The national organization will make 15 stops through the Black Belt and rural communities in the state, where they seek to build on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement by creating economic wealth through affordable homeownership.

During the event series, participants will will complete a four-hour homebuyers workshop, receive housing counseling from a NACA HUD-certified counselor and be NACA Qualified for the "Best Mortgage in America" or continue the next steps for NACA Qualification.

The release states homeowners will also have the opportunity to go through the same process to determine an affordable mortgage payment to refinance their existing mortgage with funds to renovate their homes.

The release states the organization is partnering with local mayors and community leaders for homebuyers and homeowners to access the mortgage plan, which offers no down payment, no closing costs, no fees and no mortgage insurance at a below-market fixed rate without consideration of one’s credit score.

Bruce Marks, CEO and founder of NACA, said in the release the "Achieve the Dream" event is one of the first events ever that provides homeownership opportunities to rural and small communities that have historically been disinvested and overlooked.

“We are going to communities where affordable homeownership opportunities through the government and private sector have been absent.” Marks said. "People talk about the rural areas, but our partnerships with local mayors and community leaders is doing something about it, including overcoming the lack of basic infrastructure."

The events will take place from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily at the following locations in Hale County:

  • Akron City Hall- 207 1st Avenue South in Akron
  • National Guard Armory- 515 Green Street in Greensboro

Participants can click here to register for the event, which is free and open to the public. Walk-ins will also be available.

According to the release, NACA is the largest HUD-approved nonprofit, community advocacy and homeownership organization in the United States which was started in 1988 to combat predatory lending.
