New “Made in Mexico” Restaurant Replaces Tuscaloosa’s Closed Margarita Grill

A new Mexican restaurant is open in central Tuscaloosa, replacing the closed Margarita's Grill on the northeast corner of 13th Street and McFarland Boulevard.

As the Thread previously reported, Margarita's closed in late 2022 after 15 years in business, and their former location was vacant throughout 2023.

That finally changed earlier this week, when a new restaurant called Made in Mexico Tacos & Tequila opened in the same space.

The restaurant's owners showed off a full and robust menu earlier this week at a meeting of the Tuscaloosa City Council's Public Safety Committee as they seek a liquor license from the city.

"We are just a new business in town," said Jovani Sanchez. "We serve homemade Mexican food and we're trying to do a different kind of meal that's not your typical Mexican restaurant."

In addition to the regular Americanized staples, the menu features many authentic Mexican dishes including big, flat huaraches topped with proteins and fixings, tortas sandwiches, 10-inch quesadillas and much more.

If the city grants the restaurant its business license next week, patrons can also expect tequila, margaritas and beer on offer.

Sanchez said Made in Mexico is already open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. on weekends.
