Duncanville Middle School was briefly placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon, but fortunately, police did not find a firearm or any other threat to public safety when they responded.

Sergeant Josh Hastings, a spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, said dispatchers received a report that a firearm might be on campus at Duncanville Middle School around 1 p.m. Thursday.

A number of TCSO deputies responded and the school was placed on lockdown, Hastings said, and the entire campus was searched for any weapons. He said the search involved K-9 units specifically trained to sniff out hidden firearms but nothing was discovered.

Hastings said some TCSO deputies will remain on campus for the rest of the afternoon out of an abundance of caution, but at this time law enforcement does not believe there is any threat to the middle school.

The lockdown and search come soon after two students were arrested and charged with felonies for allegedly bringing a firearm and a loaded magazine to Hillcrest High last week.
