Metchie went through light drills under the instruction of wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator Ben McDaniels during organized team activities on Wednesday.

“He’s no 100 percent yet, but in time he will be,” said head coach Lovie Smith during rookie minicamp. “I don’t have that timetable set yet, but in the upcoming weeks we’ll be able to tell that a little bit more. For us, he is going to play this year. It’s all, as much as anything, about the mental preparation, them catching up, getting in the playbook.”

The Texans selected the former Alabama pass catcher with the No. 44 overall pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. Metchie hauled in 96 receptions for 1,142 and eight touchdowns in 13 games for the Crimson Tide in 2021.

Metchie is an elite route runner that can operate on the outside or in the slot. He will add tremendous value to a wide receiver room that features Brandin Cooks and second-year pro Nico Collins.

Less than a month into his NFL career and Metchie has already had an impression on his veteran teammates.

“That kid’s special, you can just tell it," said Cooks. “You know when you talk to someone you just get that feel about a guy; the way he goes about his business.”

The Texans will continue to have organized team activities on June 3, 6-9 and mandatory minicamp on June 14-16.
