There is so much going on in February. This was supposed to be the year I made it down to New Orleans to experience a Mardi Gras parade. Due to the pandemic, the parades are canceled.

A friend explained the whole concept of the parades, krewes, and clubs. Who knew! I am already making plans for 2022! Until then, there are some great ways to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during a pandemic. A virtual celebration is at the top of the list.

According to the Mardi Gras for All Y’all Facebook page, they will be in full swing as they celebrate Carnival and everything they love about it. “Mardi Gras for All Y’all is a 3-day virtual event featuring iconic artists, chefs, and personalities at famous New Orleans venues, including Mardi Gras World, Antoine’s, Dookie Chase’s, and more. Scheduled to appear are Archie Manning, Hoda Kotb, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Emeril Lagasse, and a special guest performance by Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Winners Leo Nocintelli and George Porter, Jr (The Meters).”

The parades will be on February 12, 13, and 14th starting at 8 pm. You can watch on Facebook Live, YouTube, and Click here to check out the full line up.

Another fun way to celebrate Mardi Gras in the middle of a pandemic is baking a King Cake. According to Mardi Gras New Orleans, “the king cake tradition is believed to have been brought over from France in 1870s.” What’s up with the baby inside the cake? “each king cake has a tiny baby inside (generally plastic now, but it’s possible the baby might be made of porcelain or even gold). The lucky person who receives the slice of cake with the baby has the next king cake party (or brings the next cake of the office.)

If you want to bake your own King Cake, check out this video recipe from Southern Living. I might give it a whirl!
