Mercedes to Construct $53 Million Plant in Vance, Create 373 Jobs

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International will build a new $53 million parts assembly and sequencing plant in Vance that is projected to open in July 2022 and create 373 new jobs.

The Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority Board of Directors met Thursday and approved an incentive package for the new facility that will abate around $3.2 million in ad valorem and sales/use taxes over a 10-year period. MBUSI and new employees at the plant are expected to generate more than $27 million in tax revenue for the construction and operation of the facility during a 20-year period.

"This will create 373 new career opportunities for people in West Alabama and the Tuscaloosa County area, and we are more than thrilled to be a part of that," said TCIDA Executive Director Danielle Winningham.

The new plant will create and assemble parts for Mercedes' line of electric vehicles, which are a top priority for the automotive manufacturer. MBUSI has already invested $1 billion into the expansion of its existing Vance plant and the creation of a new battery plant in the Bibb County town of Woodstock.

"We’re are so grateful and excited for all of MBUSI's investment into electric vehicle production for this area," Winningham said. "It will put us on the map in terms of cutting-edge technology in the automotive industry."

The new 538,000 square-foot plant will be built on Will Walker Road in Vance and will be owned and leased to MBUSI by Vance Ventures, which is an offshoot of Graham & Company, a Birmingham-based commercial real estate agency.

Crews will break ground on the new facility Thursday, and construction is expected to wrap up in July 2022.
