Couple Found with Five Pounds of Marijuana at Northport Motel Thursday
Police in Northport charged a man and woman with trafficking after they were allegedly found with just under five pounds of marijuana outside an area motel last week.
According to court documents obtained by the Tuscaloosa Thread, police were called to the Budget Inn on McFarland Boulevard in Northport on reports of domestic violence last Thursday, October 20th.
It's unclear how the original call led to the eventual drug bust, but officers said a man and woman were parked in front of one of the motel's room, and police found a black garbage bag in the back seat full of marijuana.
The Northport Police Department turned the case over to the multi-agency West Alabama Narcotics Task Force, whose agents said the substance in the bag tested positive for marijuana and weighed 2,237 grams, or 4.93 pounds.
The severity of charges for possessing marijuana varies based on the weight of the drug. Both people at the scene, Shavoria Shaykera Williams and Alton Thomas, were charged with trafficking marijuana, a Class A felony.
Thomas was also charged with two counts of unlawfully possessing a controlled substance and both were charged with failure to affix a tax stamp -- three counts of the Class C felony for Thomas and just one for Williams.
Neither suspect was listed as an inmate in the jail Monday, which may indicate they have been released on bond.
