Owen Diodati Named CCBL Player of the Week
Alabama baseball outfielder Owen Diodati was honored as the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Player of the Week this week. Diodati, also referred to as Dio, is currently playing in the collegiate baseball summer league with the Wareham Gatemen based in Wareham, Massachusetts. Dio was selected out of 10 teams the CCBL currently represents.
During his first week of play, Dio averaged .450 with three home runs and nine RBI. In total, Dio has appeared in nine games with 36 at-bats, four home runs on the season, and 12 RBI.
Dio just finished his impressive sophomore season playing for the University of Alabama. He saw time playing in both the outfield and as the designated hitter. Dio played in 56 games with 55 starts. During the 2021 season, Dio accounted for 11 home runs and 40 RBI, which ranked second on the team in both categories.
On March 9th, Dio had a walk off grand slam against South Alabama where the final score was 11-8. Dio recorded the game-winning home run in the series finale at Texas A&M the following month, which gave the Tide their first SEC sweep of the season after going through their 2-7 drought in SEC play. The following weekend during the Iron Bowl of baseball, Dio walked it off again to win the game in the opening series against Auburn.
Going into the season, Dio had been freshly named Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball News and First Team All-Canadian by Canadian Baseball Network. He was selected as Preseason Third Team All-American this past sophomore year by the NCBWA and named to the Preseason All-SEC Second Team by the league coaches. Dio completed the season on the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll for 2021.
